Designer Diaries part 2 – Heavenfall

Let’s talk about the Campaign Mode! As I said in the last article, we have been keeping track of the community feedback since the release of the first Massive Darkness, and from the start one of the main things we wanted to enhance was then called the “Story Mode”. That’s why we put a lot of effort into the new Campaign Mode and decided to make it a big, unique experience, substantially different from single-game scenarios. That’s how we ended up with Massive Darkness 2: Heavenfall – a complete campaign in a box.

Massive Darkness 2: Heavenfall brings not just new scenarios that can be played as part of a huge campaign, but also new components, monsters, skills and rules for a balanced and innovative game play experience from beginning till end. This means groups that are more into Campaign experiences can use the Heavenfall Box to deep dive into a sprawling adventure that will tell the story of a desperate attempt to end the Darkness once and for all. Those Heroes will face important decisions that will affect the entire party, reach new and higher levels and even visit the nearby town where they’ll be able to take Jobs at the Tavern, visit the Blacksmith or the Alchemist, and even Gamble! Role-players welcome!

Heavenfall will come with fourteen scenarios, and based on the party’s decisions and the resolutions of some scenarios, players will be adventuring through eight of them during a campaign, something which adds to the replyvalue within the box. Ok, I hope now you are as excited we are about what’s new in the Campaign expansion! Let’s dive into more details

First and most important was getting the balance right. In the Campaign mode, Heroes will be able to reach level 10, which is 5 levels morethan in the One-Shot experience, and to assure balance at higher levels, a new set of dice was added, which grants a higher tier of attack and defense rolls. Of course, Mobs and Roaming Monsters will reach level 10 as well, becoming even more threatening and carrying even more interesting loot. Speaking of loot, the campaign introduces a new rarity of items with the Legendary Item Deck. You will definitely want to be on the lookout for these treasures.

When reaching new levels, players of course will be able to unlock newskills that can only be obtained at level six and beyond. These special skills that might be hybrid skills unlocked when a hero masters certain skills from two skill trees, or they could be Ultimate Stronger skills available when players decide to follow one skill tree to the top. For example, the Wizard hasthe Fire Specialization and the Frost Specialization on their skill tree. During the Campaign, the Wizard may decide to master both, which will unlock the Lava Specialization skill. Alternatively, they can follow the Ultimate path, and focus on getting the Ultimate skill. For instance, if the Wizard chooses the Fire specialization, ignoring the Frost Tree, they will become a massive source of Fire, burning every zone and creature they move through.

Between scenarios, players will have a chance to visit Town and prepare themselves for the next challenge. In Town, players can relax in the main Tavern where they can also obtain a Job card for the Party that, if completed during next scenario, will earn them all sorts of rewards. Players can visit the Blacksmith to trade for items with greater rarities (item which for the Campaign will only be available in Town), the Herbalist where they willbe able to buy potions, or the Inventor where for a high price they can buy blueprints for specific treasures they seek; and, if they are felling lucky, they can even gamble for better gear.

While those are the main gameplay additions in Heavenfall, other new things were added throughout. For example, there are two new full Sets of Items that, just like the Shadowbane from the core box, when equipped together will add a bonus to your character.

We’re really excited to show you more about the brand new upgraded campaign experience in Massive Darkness, and I’ll be back soon to talk about other exciting aspects of the game! That’s all for now!
