With Daenerys Targaryen’s marriage to Khal Drogo, House Targaryen gained a major asset in an army of loyal Dothraki. These horsemen may be seen as simple barbarians by those in Westeros, but they have a long and storied history in addition to rich culture. That culture centers around horsemanship. The Dothraki are famed for their riding abilities and when the army heads to battle, they do so astride their warhorses. The Dothraki Screamers are a mainline unit in this highly-mobile force. Targaryen players will soon be able to add more of this unit, which they first got in the Targaryen Starter Set, to their collections. Let’s take a deeper look into what this unit brings to the table.
The Dothraki Screamers are a mildly expensive unit to field, costing 6 points. However, they bring a lot to the table, even if their stat card doesn’t have many special rules or abilities on it. It’s hard to look simply at the unit’s offensive and defensive capabilities separately, as they’re both very intertwined in the makeup of the unit itself. So, let’s simply look at the card as a whole.
Being a unit of light cavalry, the Dothraki Screamers are fast with a Speed of 6. Of course, as part of their Cavalry special rule, they can make a free Maneuver action at the start of their activation. That means the unit can easily be 12+ inches away from where they start their turn. This is one of the major advantages of the cavalry-heavy style of a House Targaryen army. They’re an extremely mobile force, being able to take objectives quickly or reinforce one-another when things start to go poorly.
Being highly trained combatants shows in their attack block with their Dothraki Arakhs. They hit on a 3+ and roll 7 dice when at full ranks. Of course, the unit only has two ranks to begin with and each model has 3 Wounds apiece. Even if the unit takes 5 Wounds, the Screamers will still have 3 models in the unit and still be at full ranks. So, this unit will be rolling those 7 dice much of the time even when a regular infantry unit might have lost a rank and already be down some attack dice.
The Dothraki eschew the use of heavy armor. They head to battle in not much more than their riding pants. As such, the Screamers’ Defense Save is only a 5+. This is not a unit that commanders will want to leave in a protracted melee combat for long or let them come under fire from enemy ranged attacks. The last stat on their card is their Morale of 6+, showing their conviction of fighting for Khal Drogo and Daenerys.
The Dothraki Screamers are an uncomplicated, straightforward unit. They are on the table to use their high mobility to their commander’s needs. They can be in almost part of the battlefield in short order, putting their effective melee attacks to use where required. They’re all-offensive, with good players keeping them out of harm from the enemy at any cost.
The Dothraki Screamers Unit Box will be available later this month.
